The Supreme Australian Championship is the premier national sheepdog trial organised under the auspices of the Australian Sheep Dog Workers’ Association (ASDWA). First held in 1990 in Deloraine, Tasmania, the event was established to give triallers from across Australia a national stage on which to compete. The name “Supreme Australian Championship” was adopted in 1992 when the competition became fully integrated into ASDWA’s annual calendar.
 

The Championship rotates annually between participating states, offering competitors the opportunity to showcase the working ability, skill, and stockmanship of both handler and dog. The event has evolved with official rules and a standard course format, including a dedicated Supreme course adopted in 1998, ensuring fairness and consistency across states.
 

Competition is typically divided into multiple sections, including Open, Improver, and Novice levels, with scores accrued through multiple rounds. The Open Final determines the overall Australian Supreme Champion each year, with judging based on skill, efficiency, and adherence to ASDWA trial standards.
 

Over the years, the Supreme Championship has benefited from long-term sponsorship, helping sustain and grow the event as the flagship trial in Australia’s sheepdog calendar.
